The Modular Car
Short introduction
ModCar proposes a new concept in automotive design and production philosophy that breaks with the traditional unibody or ‘monocoque’ concepts that are still in use today. It seeks new vehicle architectures to meet the needs of 21st century society, to increase European competitiveness, and protect the environment. Overall, the objective is to minimise complexity in design and production while optimising vehicle delivery and variety to the end-customer.
In ModCar, OEMs, supplier, and research institutes work for an harmonized optimization of the product targeting a new product structure for the car and aiming for new methods and tooling:
- New methods and tools for complexity management
- New technical solutions for reducing variety
- New production processes to achieve the 5 Day Car
- Mechatronic System integration
- Solutions for the complete life cycle
- Cost optimized systems with higher quality
- Weight reduction by using new materials
In a nutshell:
Optimize the product and modules towards a 5-day-production.
This shows the clear link to the other work-packages:
The requirements come from production processes (theme 3) mainly:
- production
- logistics
- time constraints
- hour of delivery (max. 5 days)
- modularity
- cost
- value creation
- European content
