TRW is one of the leading producers of engine intake and exhaust valves, as well as valve train components. It includes over 1.500 employees and has an annual turnover of 150 Million EURO. It is present in the worldwide valve and valve train market and has about 40% of the world market share. TRW’s main business strategy is to co-operate with engine manufactur-ers and other component suppliers in order to develop reliable, cost competitive products that improve fuel economy, reduce emissions increase engine performance and reduce valve train noise. TRW has an R&D department with 25 facilities with highly qualified personnel for metallurgical, physical, chemical non-destructive tests, impact failure, fatigue, wear, residual stress, surface finish and digital image analysis.

A goal for 2010 is to deliver a complete valve train module with electromagnetic actuated valves. This electromagnetic valve train (EMVT) has a fuel economy, an emission reduction and an improved overall performance that cannot be achieved with conventional valve trains. On the other side the modularity will have a great impact on production processes, logistics and the supply chain i.e. reducing lead time and offering a late configuration by software. In order to pursue such strategy the company allocates the necessary research and development efforts.

TRW is currently taking part in two EU funded projects:

Development of an Electromagnetic Valve Actuation System for High Efficiency Engines (G3 RD-CT-2000-00363)
Light Weight Valves for High Efficient Engines (GRD1-1999-10265)
