The St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Science (SPIIRAS) was founded in 1978 as a research institute for computer science focusing on information technologies for research, production and education. It is a government non-profit organisation with highly qualified personnel (~ 215 including 90 PhD) and has been participant in numerous European programmes, such as INTAS, INCO-COPERNICUS, ESPRIT, Eureka and several current IST projects of 5ht FP.

SPIIRAS plans to include its big experience in such areas as manufacturing systems and business process re-engineering, as well as its expertise in the areas of corporate knowledge management and virtual supply network management.

This expertise has been applied and improved by research works for both governmental and commercial (non-governmental) organisations. SPIIRAS has had joint projects aimed at knowledge management & logistics with such companies as Ford Research Centre (Germany & USA) and Festo (Austria & Germany). Among the recent collaborations with governmental organisations such organisations as many EU research organisations and European Office of Aerospace Research & Development (the project devoted to rapid knowledge fusion in scalable infosphere) worth to be mentioned.
