BMW Motoren GmbH situated in Steyr, Austria is a 100% subsidiary of BMW Group. BMW Motoren GmbH produces more than 60% of all BMW engines world wide. 100% of  all Diesel engines for BMW are designed manufactured and assembled in Steyr. BMW Motoren also delivers Diesel engines to Ford and MG-Rover.
BMW Motoren GmbH employs about 2500 people in manufacturing and about 400 in product and process development.

The logistic process of BMW Motoren is currently run under the KOVP/build-to-order scheme of the BMW group. Due to this process BMW delivers a 10 Day car to the final customer resulting in a 4 day stable horizon for engine call offs from the vehicle plant.

Certain problems are present leading to non-optimal logistic operations e.g. temporarily huge amounts of engines in stock, costly restrictions caused by call-off flexibility, imbalances in production planning and "phantom costs" due to late order changes by the customer plants of BMW AG compared to the initial forecasts. Furthermore an even higher lead time reduction is envisaged in the next view years as well as  optimizing the flexibility in the material supply chain. All these activities should lead in the ability to support a 5 day car production scheme in the future. Large synergies are expected in advances in production planning for the engine plant due to the results and activities within the ILIPT work packages. An enhanced supplier network which can better be adapted to the flexibility demands shall be established.

BMW Motoren is extensively using SAP as MRP system. All data of the operational logistic process is available within SAP. It should therefore be easy to serve as a data source for e.g. extensive current state analysis and simulations etc. BMW Motoren currently uses 4flow vista as a Supply Chain Network Planning tool.
